I Have A Revolutionary In Me

August 13, 2009

Okay, so here’s one thing I’ve learned about myself. I have the heart of a revolutionary. Not the violent kind you hear about on the news that leverages the plight of some oppressed people for their own political gain. Not that kind.

But the “let’s make a movie out of this story” kind of heart. All of my favorite movies and stories have this one common thread. At the center of them is a story about a man, a woman or a team of people who fight for something bigger than themselves. Who wage war against mediocrity and injustice. Who revolutionize some (every?) aspect of who we are.

The kind of movies that have anthems as their theme songs. That’s me. I’m one of those guys. William Wallace. Neo. Ned Kelly. The Mighty Ducks. Well, maybe not the whole team. Just the kid who does knuckle puck.

Anyway, I’ve learned about myself that my heart beats this way. At times it’s a hindrance. I’m always looking to “blow the top off” of some field, some industry, some practice. I’m always looking to completely change the way people look at ____________. It doesn’t always matter what it is… but it needs me to flip it on it’s end.

I can tell you this, I don’t know what industry or job you have. But it needs a revolution. That’s kind of my go-to answer on anything.

I’m not bragging, mind you. I’m not saying… “hey, over here! I’m a hero!” I’m saying that I’m like an alcoholic who finds the liquor in every building. It’s just in me, sometimes like a poison, sometimes not.

I say all of that to say that the next few months will be a transition for me. Back into a world where it’s more accepted to be a revolutionary. Heck, it’s expected. But if I’m honest with myself, while by night I might feel like the Caped Crusader… by day I sometimes feel more like one of the Three Amigo’s. You know, the short one who’s career never took off.

I need to trust that I’m not the hero of the story. Jesus is. The only heroic thing I can do… truly the only heroic thing anyone can do is to fully live in, fully rely on and fully trust that Jesus will be Jesus.

I have a revolutionary in me. His name is Jesus.
